What causes white spots on teeth?

White and brown spots on teeth can appear for a wide variety of reasons, including:

  • Fluorosis treatment - Excess fluoride during tooth development, causing a mottled or chalky appearance.
  • Post-brace white spots - One of the most common causes; white marks left on teeth after orthodontic treatment.
  • Early tooth decay (initial caries) - The first sign of decay appears as a white, chalky spot before a cavity forms.
  • Developmental enamel defects - Affecting the formation of enamel during childhood.
  • Trauma - A knock to a developing tooth can cause discolouration years later.

Whatever the cause, ICON treatment can address many of these effectively, and in a single appointment.

What is ICON treatment?

ICON uses a special resin to infiltrate and seal the porous areas within the tooth enamel that cause white spots on teeth to appear. To remove white spots on teeth, the process is simple:

  1. Preparation - A conditioning gel is applied to the affected teeth to gently remove any surface porosities
  2. Infiltration - A clear resin is applied, which penetrates deep into the enamel and fills the porous structure
  3. Light curing - The resin is set using a dental curing light, bonding permanently within the tooth
  4. Polish - The tooth is polished to a natural, smooth finish

The entire process is completed without injections and using a minimally invasive technique. Most patients are amazed by the results and by how comfortable the procedure is.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What causes white spots or white marks on teeth?

White spots or chalky marks on teeth are very common and are typically caused by an uneven distribution of minerals within your tooth enamel. One of the most frequent causes is decalcification, which occurs when plaque builds up on the teeth and strips away essential minerals. This is incredibly common after having fixed braces removed if keeping the areas around the brackets clean proved difficult. Another common culprit is fluorosis, which happens if a person swallows too much fluoride while their adult teeth are still developing under the gums during early childhood. Finally, these marks can be caused by enamel hypoplasia, a developmental condition where the enamel doesn't form fully or properly, often as a direct result of a childhood illness or physical trauma to the baby teeth.

  • How much does ICON treatment cost in Reading?
