Oral hygiene

The early symptoms of gum disease are mild and can be overlooked. Our hygienists are highly trained in spotting the symptoms, catching it and taking action before it can worsen.

Do I need hygiene treatment?

Regular hygiene appointments will help prevent gum disease and dental decay, removing any build up of plaque and bacteria that can lead to more significant issues developing. If left untreated, gum disease can cause receding gums and even tooth loss. Indeed, increasing evidence suggests a link between gum disease and many general health conditions, including heart disease and inflammatory disorders.

What does a hygiene appointment involve?
1

Examine

We examine your teeth and gums, looking for signs of gum disease or other issues. We ask you a little about your general health and if you have any specific concerns.

2

Deep Clean

The main part of your appointment is a deep clean, known as a scale and polish. We remove plaque and tartar deposits, especially from those areas that are hard for you to reach at home. This is followed by a professional polish, leaving your teeth feeling fresh and sparkling.

Advice

We give you some practical, personalised advice to help you keep your mouth healthy and disease free. We can also show you how to use special cleaning tools to help you keep up a good oral care routine at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does dental hygiene treatment hurt?

You may find the deep clean part of your appointment uncomfortable, but this does not last long. We take time to ensure you are feeling relaxed and at ease before beginning treatment to minimise sensitivity and discomfort. Other hygiene treatment options, such as AirFlow polishing, are completely pain free.

  • Can my hygienist whiten my teeth?

The aim of hygiene treatment is not to whiten your teeth, but you will likely find they appear brighter and more sparkling once the stubborn plaque and tartar has been removed. If you are interested in changing the shade of your teeth, please talk to us about our teeth whitening options.

  • Do you offer any alternatives to traditional hygiene treatment?

At Kendrick View, we also provide AirFlow treatment, a revolutionary new way to effectively and efficiently clean teeth in a completely pain free way. A compressed jet of air, water and bicarbonate particles is sprayed onto your teeth, removing plaque, biofilm, tartar and staining from even the most hard to reach areas. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more.

  • How often do I need to visit the hygienist?

The length of time you should leave between hygiene appointments depends on the condition and health of your teeth and gums. Most patients have appointments every six months, but you may be advised to attend more or less regularly. You don’t have to see the dentist before having hygiene treatment, so you are able to make direct regular appointments, or schedule top up appointments when you wish to.
