Root Canal Treatment

SECTION THREE After your treatment Numbness Your lip, cheek and tongue may stay numb for up to three hours. Avoid hot food and drinks until full feeling returns, and take care not to bite or chew the soft tissues by accident. Tenderness and pain relief It is normal for the tooth to feel tender, bruised or slightly high for a few days, especially on biting. Paracetamol and ibuprofen taken as directed control this well, and discomfort should ease over three to five days. Protect the tooth A root-treated tooth is more brittle than a living one and usually needs a crown or onlay to stop it splitting. Until that is fitted, chew carefully on the other side. Please keep the appointment for the permanent restoration — it is the biggest factor in how long the tooth lasts. Your temporary filling Between visits a temporary filling protects the tooth. It may feel slightly rough or taste unusual at first. Wait an hour before eating on that tooth. Avoid sticky or very hard food on that side. Ring us if it comes out, feels loose, or the tooth becomes sensitive to cold again. Everyday care Care for it exactly like any other tooth. Brush for two minutes twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes, and attend the check-ups we recommend. Please ring us if you experience Severe pain not controlled by your painkillers, or pain worsening after three days. Facial swelling, a raised temperature, or feeling generally unwell. Difficulty swallowing or breathing — telephone us at once, or call 999.
