Q: What is an oral cancer screening?
Every year in the U.K., over four thousand people are found to be suffering from Oral Cancer (cancer of the mouth). The numbers have risen alarmingly with a 23% increase over the previous five years. Early detection is the key to long-term survival. Unfortunately, Oral Cancer can be present for a long time before any symptoms develop.
The chances of surviving the disease more than five years are less than 50%, but that can increase to 90% if the signs are detected early enough. This is one of the reasons why we usually recommend dental check-ups every six months.
As part of every examination, we examine the soft tissues of your mouth (lips, cheeks, gums, palate, tongue and throat) carefully to check for any signs of change, which could indicate the possibility of an oral cancer. If you are at all worried, please come and see us to have your mouth checked.
