What are Crowns & Bridges?
|
- Crowns
- A crown or cap is a tooth-shaped covering placed entirely over a tooth.
Crowns are used to restore teeth that have been badly damaged, or are heavily
filled, misplaced or discoloured. They may be made from porcelain, gold or
porcelain bonded onto a metal alloy. Each has different advantages for
particular situations and they are an extremely strong, durable form of
restoration.
Crowns with a metal core are opaque and older crowns can often look grey and
lifeless. Sometimes a black line can be seen around the gum line. Modern
porcelains avoid this problem. Crowns can be made from all-porcelain or have a
porcelain edge against the gum. Light can then pass through more naturally
so they look much more real.
- Bridges
- Bridges are used to replace missing teeth and fill gaps. They can be like a set
of crowns joined together (a conventional bridge) or like a crown attached to
existing teeth with adhesive tape (a Maryland Bridge). Unlike dentures,
Bridges are permanently fixed to the teeth.
